When you are moving into a new home, there are a few things that need to be done within the first 24 hours that are crucial. You want to be able to enjoy your new home for years to come, and what you do at the start of your homeownership will determine your future. At Progressive Real Estate, we have helped countless people find their new apartment, condo, or home rental and with all of this experience we have come up with a list of things that you need to do within the first day of moving into your new home.

Account for Everything

Landlords will go through the unit with you and perform an inspection of the property, marking down any issues, marks, and property that is currently in the unit. Be active in this process and make sure that you receive a copy of the report. It is highly recommended to take pictures of the damaged areas as well as photos around the apartment throughout this process so that you have photographic evidence of the starting state of the residence. This helps with any possible future disagreements when it comes time to move out.

Figure Out Appliances and Amenities

Even better to do when your landlord is still there is to figure out how everything works. Turn on the stove top and oven, test the dishwasher and all the faucets, make sure that the fire alarm and smoke detector is working. These are all essential features in your new home and if they need to be serviced then having the landlord present so that they can get on it right away is the best way to tackle the problem. Also, get the landlord to show you the breaker and explain how to use it, then make sure they show you the main water valve, as you will want to be able to turn off your water in an emergency or if you are going away on vacation.

When you move into a new rental property, your landlord will have cleaned it before you move in. Before you put all of your own items into your new home though, you will want to go over everything again. Steam cleaning the carpets is a great option to get the gunk out, and going over the appliances and all of the fixtures in the bathroom will ensure that they are sparkling new for your first use. While there is nothing in the way, it is also a great opportunity to both wash windows and to clean the hardwood floors. Your new home will look perfect!

Meet the Neighbours

When you are moving in you may run across your neighbours. Make sure to stop and say hello. These are the people you are going to be living with for the foreseeable future, and you want to get to know them. Just as you would protect them and their property, they will protect you and yours, knowing them personally will encourage this.
